CJC Executive Board Application

Welcome to the CJC Executive Board application!

As an applicant, be aware that if selected you will be expected to serve in your desired position from the beginning of the Fall 2011 semester until the end of the Spring 2012 semester. Please take that into account if you are planning to go abroad either semester.  Please read the following position descriptions carefully as you decide how you want to get involved:

***All board members are expected to serve as representatives of CJC, which includes promoting a friendly, inclusive, and inviting environment in addition to performing the individual responsibilities outlined below. Board members are also expected to attend all CJC events, including social, educational, and religious activities, unless the Co-chairs are notified in advance of a conflict.  Religious activities include Friday night services and at least one Saturday morning service per month.  They should also be prepared to attend weekly board meetings and help with general CJC planning.

Co-Chair:  The CJC Co-Chairs are the students chosen to oversee the community. This position offers an amazing opportunity to represent an organization that reaches hundreds of students every year. Co-Chairs serve as the face of the community to Hillel, the greater Penn community, and the outside Jewish community. As such, it is important for the Co-Chairs to attend all religious services and CJC events. Major responsibilities include running/scheduling board meetings, serving as a liaison to Hillel staff and other Hillel leaders, attending community leader meetings, and overseeing the sectors within CJC. The Co-Chairs set broad goals for the community and help other board members plan social/educational/religious programming.  Co-Chairs are expected to have already served a full term on CJC Board.

Religious Life Chair:
The CJC Religious Life Chairs are responsible for planning and orchestrating services (both Shabbat and other holidays). This includes recruiting people to attend and participate in services and other religious activities, as well as ensuring that services run smoothly.  As such, Religious Life Chairs are expected to attend all services, excluding special circumstances.  They should also work to improve the religious and spiritual aspects of CJC by creating a tight-knit, spiritual community.  It is advisable for the Religious Life Chair to be familiar with weekly services and to have a desire to learn.  The knowledge gained in this position is invaluable and allows you to become a lifelong resource to the greater Jewish community.

Social Chair:
The Social Chairs of CJC are responsible for planning social events throughout the semester. Events include themed Havdalah social events, Shabbat dinners, Onegs, study breaks and much more. CJC typically sponsors two Shabbat dinners and two Havdalahs per semester.   Social chairs also have the opportunity to plan and execute their own innovative ideas!   Social Chairs should work together with other board positions in order to promote CJC events and reach out to and work with the rest of the Hillel community.

Education Chair:
The Education Chairs' central responsibilities include planning structured learning times for members of the community, coordinating the weekly D'var torahs, and helping to bring interesting and unique speakers to campus. The Education Chairs are also responsible for organizing a weekly learning session for one month of each semester.  These learning sessions should incorporate innovative, modern, and provocative ideas in Jewish thought. Education Chairs should also assist those CJC members preparing Divrei Torahs for Friday night services.  This position is a great way to get involved with Jewish education and learn along the way!

Outreach Chair: The Outreach Chairs of CJC work to establish good relations with all members of CJC and encourage their involvement. Outreach Chairs are also expected to contact new and interested individuals, as well as work to retain older members of the community. They should also take other CJC students out to coffee, or a similar activity, to continually build and strengthen the community.  Outreach chairs are also responsible for working together with other board positions in order to promote and market CJC events and reach out to the community. Lastly, Outreach Chairs are responsible for organizing visits of prospective students who have expressed interest in CJC, which includes communicating with them and finding students within the community to host them.

You may apply for one or more CJC board positions. Please rank your preference of positions in the boxes listed below, understanding by doing so, you are letting us know that you are willing to accept any of the listed opinions. Therefore, please list all positions you are willing to hold. Writing only one position, however, will NOT hurt your chances at getting a position on board, so just listing one position is fine, too. We’re just interested in seeing what you’re OK with doing!
