With the high holidays and the first day of class coinciding this year at Penn, Jewish students didn’t waste a moment seeking out the impactful experiences that have come to define Penn Hillel. At our Hillel, we seek to balance breadth and depth; constantly striving to reach more students as well as deepen each individual student’s experience. In their first weeks of school, over 2200 students, faculty, staff, and community members chose from a menu of Reform, Conservative, Orthodox, and learner’s services as well as several options for meals. Even before the High Holidays hit, Penn Hillel welcomed 500 freshmen through special New Student Orientation programming including a freshmen reception on Friday night and a midnight pancake breakfast. The Jewish Renaissance Project, Penn Hillel’s branded initiative to engage uninvolved Jewish students, reached an additional 150 students during the holidays, who would likely otherwise not participate in holiday celebrations.
In Pirke Avot (Ethics of our Ancestors), it is written that the world stands on three things: Torah (study), prayer, and acts of loving-kindness. These three pillars serve as cornerstones for the Jewish experience that Penn Hillel creates; please see below to learn more.
• Torah - Study
• Avodah - Prayer
