Shabbat at Penn Hillel is a sight to be seen. Every week, hundreds of students take a break and celebrate Shabbat by enjoying dinner and a variety of services, interesting speakers, and chill time at Steinhardt Hall.
Each Friday evening, there are several options and styles of services. They are: Reform, Conservative, Orthodox, Sephardic Yiddin Quakers, and Shira Chadasha (Orthdodox-Egalitarian modeled after an Israeli community). Shira Chadasha and Sephardic Yiddin Quakers usually meet every other week; check the Penn Hillel calendar for exact schedule). All services begin about five minutes after candle lighting (see below for exact service times). Services are promptly followed by a communal dinner in Falk Dining Commons.
Friday nights at Hillel often include special events from themed programming called PHridays to guest speakers. See our calendar to find out details about these special events each Friday night.
On Saturday mornings, both Orthodox and Conservative services are available and are followed by a delicious Kiddush and lunch in the Falk Dining Commons. A light snack and communal singing follow Orthodox and Conservative afternoon services. Assorted events may follow the conclusion of Shabbat.
